Will choosing faux flowers look cheap?

Let’s address the elephant in the room: can faux wedding flowers look cheap?

The honest answer is yes. They absolutely can. We’ve all seen artificial flowers with shiny plastic leaves, strangely perfect petals and colours that have never existed anywhere in nature. If that’s what comes to mind when you hear the words ‘faux wedding flowers’, we completely understand why you might be hesitant.

But artificial flowers have changed enormously, and there is now a huge difference between inexpensive artificial flowers and high-quality, real-touch wedding florals. Done well, faux flowers can create beautiful, natural-looking arrangements that are surprisingly difficult to distinguish from fresh flowers!

What makes faux flowers look cheap?

Usually, it comes down to the quality of the individual stems and how they’re arranged. Very shiny leaves, obvious plastic, flat colours and identical flowers are often what make an arrangement immediately look artificial. Nature simply isn’t that perfect. Real roses vary slightly in colour, petals curl differently, stems bend and leaves aren't all exactly the same shape.

That’s something we pay particular attention to when choosing flowers for Keepsake. We use real-touch flowers and look for stems with natural colour variation, texture and those little imperfections that make an arrangement feel believable. We also mix different flowers and foliage rather than creating arrangements where every bloom looks identical.

The styling matters just as much. More flowers don't necessarily equal a more luxurious arrangement. Sometimes an enormous mass of inexpensive artificial flowers will look far less convincing than a smaller arrangement made from carefully chosen, high-quality stems.

Will my wedding guests know my flowers are faux?

This really depends on the quality and material. If you are careful about who you hire with, the answer is probably not. And you might be surprised by just how realistic modern faux flowers can be.

High-quality real-touch flowers are a world away from the flimsy, frabic-y, obviously artificial flowers many of us picture when we hear the word ‘faux’. Colours should have natural variation, and carefully chosen foliage and stems help create the slightly imperfect, organic appearance you would expect from fresh flowers.

The way your guests actually experience your flowers matters too. Nobody is standing two inches away inspecting individual petals. They see your bouquet as you walk down the aisle, your meadows lining the ceremony, your centrepieces across a beautifully dressed table and your statement flowers as part of the overall room. At those natural distances, well-designed faux arrangements can be incredibly convincing and photograph beautifully.

Good floristry also plays a huge part. We deliberately mix flower varieties, tones, textures, and foliage rather than creating arrangements that feel too uniform or ‘perfect’. Ironically, making faux flowers look realistic often means embracing the little irregularities found in nature.

Aren’t fresh flowers more luxurious?

Fresh flowers are beautiful, but faux flowers offer something that nature simply can’t: certainty.

Every stem can be selected, checked and arranged long before your wedding day. There are no bruised petals discovered on the morning of your wedding, no snapped stems, no flowers beginning to brown at the edges and no arrangements slowly wilting as the day goes on. Whether your ceremony is at 11am or your guests are still dancing at midnight, your flowers will look exactly as they did when they were first put in place.

That consistency also gives us much more control over the finished design. We can choose every individual stem for its shape, colour and position within an arrangement, rather than working around what has arrived from a grower that week. Your favourite flower doesn't suddenly become unavailable because of a poor growing season, and a September wedding doesn't necessarily mean giving up the peonies you fell in love with. It allows us to design around your vision rather than around what nature happens to be doing that month.

There are some less glamorous advantages too: no pollen, no unexpected insects hiding amongst the foliage, no water to spill and no worrying about flowers drying out in the heat. For couples getting married during the height of summer, travelling with their flowers or moving arrangements between the ceremony and reception, that reliability can make an enormous difference.

Then there is reusability. Fresh wedding flowers are usually grown, transported, arranged and enjoyed for a remarkably short period before being discarded. Faux arrangements can be used again and again across many weddings, and individual stems can be repurposed into entirely new designs.

Perhaps most importantly, faux flowers give you time. We can create your arrangements in advance, photograph them, make adjustments and perfect the details without a ticking clock telling us that the flowers have to be used within the next few days. By the time your wedding arrives, we already know exactly how your flowers are going to look.

And on a day when so many things are outside of your control, we rather like being able to make the flowers one thing that isn't.

Are faux wedding flowers actually cheaper?

This one is slightly more complicated. Faux doesn’t automatically mean cheap, and good faux flowers can actually be expensive to buy. High-quality real-touch stems cost considerably more than the artificial flowers you might find on Temu, and a large arrangement can contain dozens of individual stems.

The difference is that faux flowers can be hired. Instead of paying to purchase every single flower used to decorate your wedding, larger pieces such as arches, aisle meadows, urn arrangements and centrepieces can be used for your wedding and then returned. This can make it possible to create a much bigger floral look without purchasing hundreds of flowers that you then need to work out what to do with afterwards.

It also gives you the opportunity to spend your budget on the pieces that will make the biggest visual difference, rather than feeling that every table, chair and corner of the venue needs its own separate arrangement.

Your bridal bouquet is different.

It’s probably the most personal floral arrangement at your wedding. You choose the flowers and colours, carry it down the aisle and hold it in some of the photographs you'll keep for the rest of your life. With fresh flowers, it might only survive for a few days afterwards.

That was one of the things we loved about working with faux flowers. Your bouquet doesn’t necessarily have to disappear when the wedding is over.

So, are faux wedding flowers tacky?

They certainly can be if you’re not careful. But they don't have to be.

There is a world of difference between inexpensive plastic flowers and professionally arranged, high-quality real-touch florals. If you love the scent and fleeting nature of fresh flowers, then fresh flowers may absolutely be the right choice for your wedding. But if you like the idea of knowing what your flowers will look like beforehand, having more flexibility with your arrangements and being able to keep some of them afterwards, faux flowers are worth considering.
